A LOT of Minnesota librarians participated and we had interest from people all over the country - and all over the world! Obviously there is a need out there that 23 Things helped to fill.

My favorite Things? Probably Google Docs and del.icio.us. I regularly use three different computers (two for work and one for personal use) and being able to keep track of documents and links from all three is proving to be a real bonus. I think wikis are also very useful, but don't have much occasion to use them at this point.

What would I change about this program? I would try to have more people involved in commenting on participants' blogs. I think there's a real thrill in knowing someone has read what you've written, even if it's just a one-line "Hey, that was interesting." Hopefully if/when we (the multitypes) do 23 More Things we'll build in some method of making sure there's more commenting, whether that means volunteer readers or some way of encouraging people to read and comment on each others' blogs or...

Congratulations to all of us who've finished! And to those who haven't, keep plugging along - it's worth it!

Thing 22: Staying Current

The first thing I happened to read after Thing 22 encourages me to keep blogging is this post by Scott McLeod. It seems discouraging, but it's so true - there are zillions of blogs out there, and most of them aren't read by anyone but the owner or, if you're lucky, a few friends or co-workers. But blogging can be a great way to explore ideas and reflect on what you've learned, or just to share your opinion about whatever you want. If you're lucky, someone (or multiple someones) will be interested. Maybe you'll even make a new friend.

As for keeping up, I took a quick look at LifeHacker, and it looks like there might be some interesting items there. I also keep up a bit through American Libraries Direct, the emailed weekly newsletter from ALA. There are usually a few tech-tips in there and I post links on Metronet's homepage. I may not use a lot of these 2.0 applications in my work or personal life, but I do believe that it's important to be aware of them, so I will try to keep up at least with the "biggies."

Thing 21: Other Social Networks

As crabby as I may have sounded in Thing 20, I don't hate all social networking sites. I didn't join the 23 Things ning because I've already joined the MEMO Tech-SID ning as part of my job as the administrative assistant for MEMO. I like a lot of the features - forums, calendar, and the fact that you can use RSS to keep track of activity. And - as with anything - it gets even more functional if you pay for it. In fact, MEMO is currently exploring ning as an alternative for web hosting, partly for the forums so that we don't lose all the valuable information that gets lost via the email lists.

Anyway... the one social networking site I do use, at least somewhat, is Ravelry, which is for fiber addicts (knitters, crocheters, spinners, etc). I'm fairly new to the site so I haven't had time to play with it much, but some of the features are being able to add and track your current and future projects, show others your stash, find and share patterns, etc. There are also the traditional site features - forums, favorites, friends, and so on. If you have an interest - your location, your preferred yarn, your age group, whatever you can think of - there is a group for you (or you can create one). I know there are some other knitters doing 23 Things, so if you're interested you should sign up - but be aware that there is a waiting list and they add people a bunch at a time. (Probably smart, so they don't crash the server or otherwise create havoc.) For me, I think the most appealing feature is being able to track my projects. I made and gave away a lot of quilts over the years and didn't keep any record or picture of most of them, so I'm trying to do better with knitting. Other than that... eh. But we'll see - if there are 23 More Things On a Stick someday maybe I'll be raving about Ravelry (or some other social networking site).

Thing 20: Facebook and MySpace

First of all I have to say to Dakota County Library: Your MySpace page? OUCH. The big "Dakota" wallpaper, the red background, the yellow text... wow. I think it's great that you're out there, but... yikes.

That being said, I like how the libraries are using MySpace to highlight new books, authors, events, and so on. The Denver teen site is really well done and appears to be very active. I also liked Hennepin County and St. Paul Public Library's sites - lots going on.

I've also noticed that - of course - people have discovered that they can use these sites - as well as blogs - to advertise. I don't know if they were invited or not, but I did see quite a few "Hey, buy my new book at amazon.com" type posts on the library sites. And did anyone else notice the comment on the Thing 20 blog from "Fortune Park Hotels, Ltd"? Anything to make a buck.

I'm not personally very interested in having my own page on either MySpace or Facebook. Maybe I'm a fuddy-duddy, I don't know. I check in with my niece's MySpace page every couple weeks, but that's about it. I have taken a stab or two at seeking out old friends with whom I've lost touch, but without much luck. Maybe later, when it's not "cool" anymore. ;)

Thing 19: Explore Podcasts

Wow, this Thing turned into a lot more work than I expected! Finding a podcast I wanted to listen to was the first step, probably made all the more complicated by the fact that I'm at work so I try to keep my music (or whatever) quiet so as not to bother other people. Listening to music at a really low volume doesn't bother me, but when it's someone speaking and I can't make out what they're saying I get frustrated. But I settled on something from MPR since it was just a test. I downloaded the podcast, only to discover that Windows Media Player wouldn't play it, even though mp3 is supposed to be a supported file format. (Was I surprised? Not really.) After some investigation I decided to download Winamp, which is a long-time favorite MP3 player I've used before. Voila - it worked like a charm and the podcast started playing without a hitch. Unfortunately I wasn't interested enough to listen, so I moved on.

Next I tried podcast.com. Since I prefer to listen to music at work, I decided to see what kind of podcasts I could find under "music." After some browsing I landed on "Relaxation Music for Sleep, Stress and Anxiety Relief from Enhanced Healing." I decided to try "Relaxing Ocean" or some such title. I clicked on "play now" and, sure enough, I was soon awash (pardon the pun) in the sounds of ocean waves and new-agey music. The problem was, I couldn't figure out where the control was to turn it OFF. Turns out the control shows up in a small window in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window - of the original window, not the one where you click on "play now." And it blends in with the ads so well that by the time I figured it out - with my boss standing behind me teasing me about listening to sleep music at work - I was so irritated that even the best stress-relieving podcast wasn't going to help me. Talk about poor web design - and I pride myself on being pretty quick to see things like that. A real novice user would have been doomed to listen to ocean waves forever!!

That being said, I do think that podcasts are pretty interesting and definitely merit some more investigation. For now, though, I'm happy with good ol' Napster keeping me company while I work.

In the meantime, here's an interesting take on podcasts. Another one of those wonderful sites where, if you're willing to wade through a lot of crap, there are some true gems. I've found YouTube to be an excellent place to find those 80's music videos I grew up on, lots of humor, and quite a bit of instructional info. Two of my favorites are the "Simon's Cat" videos. If you like cats, you'll probably laugh. If you HAVE cats, you'll be in hysterics. (At least I was.) The first is "Cat Man Do," and the second is "Let Me In!"

Thing 17: ELM Productivity Tools

I think ELM is a wonderful resource for Minnesotans, but I do think it's rather daunting for the average user to get to the information they want without some expert help. I've been working around librarians for a lot of years now, but apparently the skills haven't sunk in by osmosis, as I still find myself struggling with the databases. I took a few minutes this morning and did a couple searches: one for "World of Warcraft," and the other for "knitting patterns." I found some success with each search, although I was frustrated that the knitting patterns only had a notation of "Photo (color)" without the actual photo. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words. Then again, I don't think the databases are best used for searching out knitting patterns. But the next time I need to do research on a purchase or I'm just looking for some news about a particular topic, I'd certainly give ELM another try.

I do love that we now have IP authentication so that we don't have to bother with login information anymore - yay!! And in the end, maybe the degree of difficulty for the average user to search ELM is an opportunity to highlight the value of our expert searchers. Perhaps next year for lobbying efforts we should conduct interviews with happy patrons who've successfully found the information they needed with the help of a librarian!

Thing 16: Assignment & Research Process Calculators

Ah, if only the Assignment Calculator could have helped me stay more on track with 23 Things On a Stick!! Although I must confess, I'm one of those who tend to work better under pressure. It's been a while since I was a student, but when I had a research paper due I would usually let the ideas percolate for a while, gather my resources, and then sit down to write the paper much closer to the deadline. Perhaps because I'm a perfectionist and when left to look at a project for too long I start making way too many edits.

But I digress... I do think that for many students, especially when you're first learning to write a research paper, the Assignment Calculator can be very helpful in plotting out the steps. I really like the links that are provided - sample thesis statements, how to prepare an outline, where to research your topic, etc. Those I would have used, even if I hadn't necessarily followed the exact timeline laid out for me.

Suffice it to say, I think it's wonderful that students have these resources!

Thing 15: Online Games and Libraries

I've been waiting for this one! Yep, you guessed it:

My name is Deanna and I play World of Warcraft.

That's right - not all gamers are teenage boys. There are lots of adult players and lots of women. There's something very satisfying about going home after a rough day and engaging in a little hack-n-slash to unwind.

If you missed Constance Steinkuehler's presentation "Retooling Libraries for the Digital Age" (Metronet event, 2005) about information literacy and gaming, check out the slideshow of her presentation (in pdf form - beware, it's a large file). I heard her speak before I started playing WoW, but I can definitely see her points. There is a great deal of information literacy skills that can be linked to playing online games, including: researching information about characters in the game, quests, and in-game items; technology use, including using the computer, surfing the web, voice chat, and so on; reading - there is a lot of reading involved, both in-game and in researching information about the game; responsible use - you learn to discern which sources are the most reliable, thus maximizing your gaming time. Then of course there are the social aspects that are often discussed, such as cooperation, leadership, organization...

Do I think playing online games is the best way to learn information literacy and social skills? Of course not. But I don't think we can discount the benefits, either. A youth who has no apparent interest in books (*gasp*) might still be gaining reading (and other) skills via games such as WoW. I guess I'm a believer in the "meet them where they live" philosophy when it comes to getting kids to read.

Here's my main WoW character:
Name: Nightshayde
Race: Night Elf
Class: Druid
Level: 70 (as high as you can get right now)
Realm: Shu'Halo
Guild: Hooves and Harlots

(By the way, the big glowing paw above her is the head of her staff...)

Thing 14: LibraryThing

My library: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/23penguins. I only added a few - my current reads (the knitting books) and a couple series that I've really enjoyed - but I can see where it could be both fun and time consuming to get too involved in this application. I don't think I'd use it much personally, but I can see how this could be a great tool for libraries to highlight special collections such as new arrivals, recommendations by genre, etc. I especially like that you get to see the covers of the books (very appealing to me, personally). What I did NOT like was that I couldn't find a way to put my books in order based on series numbers or other arrangements I might choose. I have enough OCD that I want the series to be listed in order. Maybe I'm just not finding the right button to click. (It's possible - I've only had one cup of coffee so far.)

(Wow, so far this is the blog post I've had the hardest time with! I use iGoogle as my homepage, and I'm smitten. I have news headlines, weather, a calendar, a to-do list, driving directions, Gmail notification, and a national park picture of the day. I also have a theme that changes depending on the time of day, which is fun (especially since I get to work early enough that it's still on "nighttime!"). I'm on the computer a lot during the day, both at work and at home, so having these organizational tools right in front of me works really well. So far I've mostly used the calendar and to-do list for work-related items, but I could also color-code items for home. I love lists and - even more - crossing things OFF my lists, so clicking the little 'x' to close out tasks I've finished is very satisfying. For record-keeping, I like that you can go back in the calendar and still see events that were set, and sometimes I wish you could do that with the to-do list as well.

I glanced at Backpack, and it looks like a really powerful tool and worth a deeper look later, but for now, iGoogle is serving the purpose and I'll stick with it.

Thing 12: Do You Digg?

Well, I did a quick perusal of the four noted social media sites for news, and here's my take:

Digg - Not terribly impressed. Of the top five items in the last 24 hours, only two were news - the other three were images. Three of the items looked like things that teenage boys would be looking for (an article about topless women in Denmark and two guffaw-inducing type images).

Reddit - I didn't like the interface with the big list of links. It seemed a little too barebones.

Mixx - Probably my favorite. I liked the interface and how items were sorted out by subject. The items (at a glance) also seemed at least fairly newsworthy.

Newsvine - This one seemed the most newsy and least "joke of the second."

Maybe I'm feeling cynical this morning but - like many popular web applications - Digg seems to be created more by the lowest common denominator of web users and less by intelligent, thinking folks. Is it that the former group is more drawn to sharing their opinions than the latter? Does the latter group not have the time or interest? Do they have their own groups already where they can share their comments? Another perfect example of this phenomenon is comment sections in online newspapers. Have you ever read the comments left by users on articles in the Pioneer Press or the Star Tribune? The biggest percentage are left by people who appear ignorant, closed-minded and simply interested in getting attention. Is the anonymity of the Internet the only place these folks can be heard? But I digress. I don't really see myself using any of these news sites on a regular basis - I prefer to get my headlines from CNN or Google headlines or something - but it is always interesting to take an occasional peek into what's "hot" on the Internet.

Thing 11: Tagging and Del.icio.us

Okay, I'm at least semi-converted to Del.icio.us now. I've been using it lately to bookmark links I find on knitting (particularly sock knitting). It's really useful to be able to access the links that I found during lunch break at work once I get home and vice-versa. I'm still experimenting with the tagging and the fact that you have to pay attention to the tags that are provided for you in lieu of creating your own. For example, I hadn't noticed that there was an option for Knitting (capital K) and one for knitting (lowercase K), and when I started looking at bundles of links and the breakdown by tags I realized that I had unwittingly created two categories under knitting, so I had to go back and change some. I think I prefer the list by tags in the upper right-hand corner as opposed to the option to "bundle" your tags, but perhaps I just haven't spent enough time exploring yet.

I certainly can see how useful this service could be for researching (what a simple way for a group of people to be able to maintain, organize and access their links!). I also think this would be a great resource for a library website to organize any number of resources for patrons - book reviews, ELM databases, and so on. The possibilities are endless!

Thing 10: Wikis

Another great way for a group to work on a single project without the confusion of emailing a file around. I think it would be especially useful in creating pathfinder or procedure documents. For the WebJunction Minnesota project we've used a wiki (PBWiki, to be more specific) to post notes from meetings, task lists, and in-process documents so that we can keep up with what each member is doing. I think it works pretty well, although it's another action that you have to integrate into your workflow. ("Uh oh, did I check the wiki this week?")

For this Thing I edited the test wiki on PBWiki by adding a page asking for comments about PLA. I'll be curious to see if anyone responds!

As for using Wikipedia for research... I guess I'm still on the fence. I think it's a great resource for certain kinds of information, or to double-check something that's not critical (like a bit of trivia to satisfy idle curiosity), but I'm not convinced that it should be an allowable resource for research. Not yet, at least.

I have noticed, though, that wikis can play an important part of information literacy when it comes to gaming. There are wiki sites out there with TONS of information about games such as World of Warcraft. Want to look up what kind of mounts you can purchase when you obtain riding skill? Want to find out how to gain reputation with a certain faction? Check out www.wowwiki.com. People are putting a lot of effort into sharing their gaming information, and that includes using a lot of information literacy skills. I really like Google Docs when there's an item that the whole team needs to work on. It's so much easier than sending around a file via email and trying to keep track of which version is the most recent. So far I've only had experience with the text documents, not the spreadsheets or presentations.

I had great fun reading and editing the test documents for 23 Things though - lots of funny librarians out there! I liked Zoho's interface, but I wasn't impressed when I clicked on the link in my confirmation email, entered my password, and then got caught in an endless loop when I clicked on "continue signing in." (It just kept throwing me back to "enter your password.") I tried it a few times and just got frustrated. Zoho loses points for that. I finally closed the window and went back in and finally realized that the login place for "Zoho CRM" is for something else and I was actually logged in the whole time, although the usual "you are logged in as..." message in the upper right corner of the page is missing. There's also no obvious way to get to "home" when you're in one of the Zoho applications. So the interface isn't as intuitive as I'd like, but maybe I'm just impatient today. I DO like that there are so many applications to explore. I'll have to add that to my "to do" list. (#457: Explore Zoho some more.)

Google Docs is pretty simple and it's convenient, since Google is taking over our lives anyway. (Resistance is futile: you will be assimilated.) Does Google have a database application? I notice that Zoho does... I likes databases... :)

Thing 8 - part 2

And a semi-complete history of my first pair of knitted socks. Instant gratification and the ability to communicate without having to use the telephone all the time. I much prefer to be able to contact people via email than to play phone tag. I've used each of the most popular free emails - Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail - as well as an address through my ISP. At some point I drifted away from Yahoo!, I use Hotmail for an alternate personal account, and I've started using Gmail for a variety of work-related programs (especially 23 Things On a Stick). I don't necessarily find Gmail's "labeling" as intuitive as the old folder system like Hotmail uses, but I'm getting there.

Instant Messaging: I used to use IM a lot more than I do now. I used Yahoo! and AIM the most. Now I sometimes use MSN Messenger, and quite often the Gmail chat. But my online chatting has dwindled a lot in the past few years. I do think it's a great way to be available to your patrons/customers, and I have used the "live chat" function a few times on various websites when I had a question about some product or other I was thinking of purchasing. If Metronet was a more customer-service type organization I would definitely entertain using IM to make myself available to users. As a reference desk tool, I think it's a great idea.

Text messaging: I'm not a big fan of the cell phone, other than having it for security in case of emergency or for the occasional "I'm running late" message to my sweetie. My experience with text messaging pretty much consists of Virgin Mobile sending me a notice that it's time to "top up" my phone.

Web Conferencing: As one of the team members for WebJunction Minnesota I've used their web conferencing system, LiveSpace, for various meetings. I like that it combines a phone conference with being able to see documents and other visual aids, along with including text chat (for when you just have to say something but don't want to interrupt the person who's talking on voice) and other functions. I haven't participated in a webinar yet, but it's on my list of things to do.

Thing 6: Online Image Generators

The trading card generator is one of my favorites. I explored this one a while back and had fun making a card for Tom Shaughnessy. The librarians at Carleton College were ahead of the game when they created trading cards for themselves - what a great, fun way to publicize the library and staff!

Anyway, this time I decided to make a card of something near and dear to my heart: our cats.

As for how to use these tools, I find them to be a great resource when trying to add a little pizazz to our website, flyers, brochures, etc. Clip art is great, but the variety of online image generators means we can use graphics that are more tailored for whatever we need, whether that's for work or personal use.

Thing 5: More Flickr Fun

Time suck! I like being able to search pictures by location - it's a good way to catch a glimpse of places you've been or lived before. This one is of the famous tulip fields in Skagit Valley, Washington, where I grew up. As a kid I don't think I ever realized that not everyone gets to grow up surrounded by such beauty. Besides the tulips I was never more than an hour from mountains, lakes, rivers, and salt water bays, and only a few hours from the ocean or the much drier eastern side of the state. I miss it. (I searched for SkagitValley to find this)

Then of course there's Fairbanks, Alaska, where I went to school for two years. This really is what the northern lights look like up there. I had a Native Alaskan friend tell me once that her grandmother used to tell the kids that if they whistled at the northern lights they would come down and pick them up and take them away. I laughed at the time, but walking home from a night class when it's dark and quiet and you can see the lights flickering and hear them hum, you pretty quickly decide that it's not worth the chance! They're beautiful, but kind of eerie.
(I searched for Fairbanks to find this)

Now if it would just warm up to at least a few degrees above zero, I'd go outside and take a couple more pictures of Frank, our guard-penguin, and upload those. I've been using RSS to track the blogs of the Metronet Information Literacy Initiative participants, and now have added feeds for a few friends who are doing 23 Things On a Stick. I use Google Reader as my aggregator, and it works well if you just want to read posts/news items, but I don't like that it doesn't include images, etc., so I often have to click through directly to the actual blog anyway. But for simply going through to read the highlights, it's very useful.

Coming soon: Thing 4 and some pictures of Frank, our yard-penguin, and his many costumes. (Along with some pics of our cats, no doubt, as they end up being my favorite subjects when I have the camera out. "Look, it's the 987th cutest thing they've ever done! (I am extremely grateful that I realized the tire was flat a) before I got very far from home so that I was able to get back to the garage and wait in the warm house, and b) before I got on a busy street or - horror of horrors - on the freeway. So it could be worse.)

But I digress. I just watched the interview with Stephen Abram. I especially liked the part where he answered the "how do we find time" question by pointing out that it's about priorities and we often make time for things we want to do (like smoking) and yet can't find time for things we should do. I know I'm guilty on that count! But I do think that 23 Things does a nice job of bridging the two - things I should do and things I want to do. It's a relatively quick and easy introduction to a lot of the Web 2.0 tools I've been interested in for a while but just never found the time to investigate. And yes, I do realize that I'm fortunate that I can use work time to complete the project, but I also believe that most of these tools have both professional and personal applications, so it is worthwhile either way.

The John Blyberg article reminded me again of how amazed I am at how librarians have had to adapt to all the changes regarding what libraries have become (or what they are expected to be). I can only imagine that, depending upon the person, some librarians are dismayed by all the changes while others are elated. These are certainly not the libraries I grew up with!

And my final thought, that for a sociologist/people-watcher like me, the idea of Web 2.0 and user-created content is pretty fascinating. Sometimes reading a blog is like reading someone's diary or peeking in their window (with permission), which greatly appeals to the part of me that is always trying to figure out what makes people tick. Of course, you have to slog through a lot of crap, too. A LOT of crap. But like panning for gold, sometimes you find a nugget or two that make it worthwhile. :)

Thing 1 - I'm started!

My blog and my avatar. I notice that most people use the avatars created at Yahoo, but they're much too hip for me. Southpark is more my style. :)

Why "23 Penguins On a Stick"? Because I can spend waaaaay too much time coming up with the perfect title. I collect penguins, so it seemed right. I also spend waaaay too much time looking at custom backgrounds. I could never, ever be an interior designer - there are too many appealing choices.

So now I've begun my 23 Things On a Stick adventure. I wish I could say that I've had time to do all of these Things before now, but - like everyone else - work and life just get in the way. I'm excited to have a structured opportunity to investigate these Web 2.0 Things. I love lists (especially crossing things off), so I think this will be perfect for me.

Welcome, fellow learners!!
